Nenagh escapes hospital restrictions as H1N1 flu cases hit 18 in Limerick Regional

Visitor restrictions remain in place at University Hospital Limerick this week due to a continuing outbreak of the flu virus, including H1N1.

There is one case of flu in Nenagh Hospital and no visiting restrictions are in place there. It is not known which flu strain is in Nenagh.

A HSE spokesperson said that there were encouraging signs that the seasonal flu had now peaked, but the rate in the Mid-West remained above the national average.

For the week ending March 5, the number of new influenza (all types) cases at UHL was 18.

The H1N1 virus, known to many as Swine Flu, is now a seasonal flu virus that circulates worldwide. The H1N1 strain has been included in the seasonal flu vaccine in Ireland since the 2010/2011 influenza season. There have been no deaths directly attributable to any type of flu at UHL group this flu season.

The spokesman said that to ensure that we are able to protect vulnerable patients, UL Hospitals Group are asking people who are considering visiting a friend or relative to ensure they do not visit if they have flu-like symptoms. If you intend on visiting, please help us by complying with infection control procedures, especially hand hygiene, while visiting the hospital. This is to ensure that we protect vulnerable patients from contracting the flu virus.

UHL has introduced a temporary restriction of one visitor per patient during the flu season and visitors are reminded that children under 14 are not allowed to visit. Visiting times are restricted to between 2pm and 4pm and to between 6pm and 9pm. This remains in effect.
