Tipperary food firms show enterprise to claim top awards

Food companies in Dundrum and Clogheen were among special category winners in the County Tipperary Enterprise Award scheme.

Borrisoleigh firm Andy Spillane Bespoke Furniture Ltd emerged as the overall winner at a ceremony held at Bru Boru, Cashel.

Rearcross based Lisduff Foods Ltd was the runner up and Thurles based Pressure Welding Manufacturing Ltd won third place.

Dundrum’s Eavaun Carmody T/a Killenure Dexter won a special award for Excellence in Material Utilisation and Clogheen’s DMA Foods Ltd won a special award for Innovation.

The local competition carries a prize fund of €5,000 in addition to commemorative trophies and certificates and 14 entries were shorted listed to compete in the County Competition.

Killenure Dexter Gourmet was established by Eavaun Carmody (a professional artist and bronze caster) in 2013 to supply premium boutique beef to high –end gastronomy outlets. Dexter is a native Irish premium cattle breed indigenous to the parish of Dundrum.

The Killenure Castle herd is the largest herd in Ireland and Eavaun was the first to sell Dexter beef commercially . La Rousse distribute the beef to the country’s top restaurants and hotels. The promoter is in the process of producing their first range of charcuterie products with plans to launch a range of dairy products later in the year. Killenure also produces premium leather which is currently used in the restoration of antique furniture within the Castle and are in the process of developing a range of luxury designer handbags and wallets. The accessory range will be embellished with horn sourced from the Dexter Herd. The entire animal and bi products are processed in this artisan rural enterprise.

DMA Foods Ltd is a food technology company established in 2012 by Denis Mc Carthy to develop and build solutions around human nutritional requirements. DMA Foods Ltd identifies real life problems encountered by consumers in their everyday lives and applies a scientific and practical approach to solving them. The promoter, an Electronic Engineer and commercial potato grower with over 20 years experience researched the potential of developing a potato product that would add value and become a class leader internationally. DMA Foods with their new Crispin’s brand intend to capture a percentage of the global health and wellness snack food market with their truly unique and delicious range of potato and vegetable crisps. The company’s growth strategy is underpinned by innovation and patented processes whereby the calorific content of the raw material has been significantly reduced and a cooking process which uses no oil or fats as part of the toasting process.

The winners were announced by Sinead Carr, Director of Community & Economic Development with Tipperary County Council. She applauded the 14 finalists for their contribution to the Tipperary economy in terms of jobs and spend and overall heightening the profile of the diverse range of micro-enterprises in the County. She added - “I am pleased to see that the food sector is featuring strongly in this year’s competition with dairy, pork, beef, potatoes, coffee, rapeseed oil - all being processed here in the county. In fact the agricultural and agri-tech sector offers huge potential for development in Tipperary and I am therefore delighted to see firms like HerdWatch emerging with leading technology. The productive sector with furniture manufacturers, steel fabrication, engineering and security solutions are all represented and performing exceptionally well on both the domestic and in some cases international markets. “I am also pleased to see that the Tourism sector is featuring on the shortlist” )

The competition was adjudicated by Martin Troy, Manager AIB and Mary Ryan, CPA, MIATI who are both members of the LEO’s Evaluation and Approvals Committee.
