'Reflections on a Rising' for Thurles Drama Groups soiree in The Source

On Friday May 20th and Saturday May 21st, Thurles Drama Group will present its annual Soiree of short pieces of theatre in The Source Arts Centre.

This year the group have decided to commemorate the Centenary of the 1916 Rising with a show entitled; Reflections on a Rising.

This year’s show will have a range of drama pieces, music, song, local history and poetry. There has been numerous showcases around the country so far this year offering communities opportunities to remember this great event and celebrate the men, women and children who lost their lives in the pursuit of Irish freedom.

There have been fantastic set pieces in Dublin and RTE have been central to this celebration with some wonderful programmes and reviews.

Reflections on a Rising will be Thurles Drama Groups chance to offer another eye to this great event. The show will be divided into two parts. Part 1 will look at the rising itself and peoples response to it at the time. This will also include a piece from Jimmy Duggan highlighting some of the Thurles/Tipperary links to the event. Jimmy is a well-known local historian who has a depth of knowledge in this area. Part 2 will look at the legacy of the Rising on subsequent Irish life through drama, music and poetry. Playwrights such as Sean O’Casey, Brendan Behan and Brian Friel will feature along with work of Yeats, Kavanagh and Seamus Heaney.

As usual our Soirees are a mixture of the funny and the serious, the sad and sometimes satirical. They are also a great opportunity for members who haven’t featured in any show this year to participate and experience the ‘buzz’ of a live performance before we break for the summer. Of course you will see some new and not so new faces!

Tickets for the show are €10 and on opening night the Drama Group are also supporting the Umbrella Foundation which is helping to house and support families in Nepal. Anyone who buys a ticket from Mary Scott or her daughter Orlaith for opening night will be donating a portion of the ticket cost to this cause along with the proceeds of the raffle on that night. Mary can be contacted directly at 087 2793171.

Please come along to The Source on May 20th or 21st for Thurles Drama Group’s; Reflections on a Rising.
