Jean and Norman Nelson celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary recently but instead of receiving gifts they asked everyone to donate the money to the Circle of Friends Cancer Support Centre.
Their generous idea raised €1,255 for the charity through their golden celebrations that took place at Ballyglass House Hotel surrounded by family and friends.
“On our 40th Wedding Anniversary we did the same thing and raised €600 for Meals-On-Wheels in the Community Centre in Tipperary Town. At that time they didn’t receive any public funding and all the workers were voluntary,” explained Jean. “When we were planning our golden wedding we thought to keep it local again with the Circle of Friends.”
Jean and Norman have been active community members for many years and are committee members of the St. Michael’s Avenue and Marion Terrace. Much of their spare time is spent organising community events including: the annual outdoor Mass, BBQ family fun days in the Summer and Christmas parties in the winter. Their efforts over the years have made a huge difference to the local community and their humble actions continue to impact the lives of those around them in a positive and life-enhancing way.
Jean and Norman enjoyed their party celebrations in Ballyglass House with music by Sam Doherty who kept the dance floor full. Jean’s Uncle Jimmy, who gave Jean away at her wedding, came from England to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary making the evening even more special.
“We’d like to say a big thank you to our friends and neighbours for so generously donating to such a worthy cause,” added Jean.
