Black Bull Threshing Festival, Birr

Black Bull Threshing Festival, Birr

Preparations for this year’s Community Threshing Festival at the Black Bull, Sharavogue, Birr, Co. Offaly on Sunday August 28th, are well under way.

As always it promises to be a great family day out with something for everyone.

Admission is only €5 and children are free.

Over years the Threshing Festival has grown from strength to strength. The key to the survival of the Festival has been the incredible commitment from the people within the community. This year the funds raised will go towards the Coolderry GAA community gym project.

We will have all our usual attractions on the day including Old Time Threshing, Pony & Trap Rides, Sheaf Pitching, Pillow Fighting, Traditional Music & Dance, Dog Show, Auction and much more.

The Ladies in the parish are busy preparing home baking for the popular Produce stall.

There are also some new attractions such as the ‘Fittest Family Contest’ and our craft stand where visitors can buy locally made crafts.

The ever popular vintage display will provide some extra displays this year where there will be live display of Rope Making, Basket Making and Wood Turning.

There will also be displays of vintage cars, tractors, stationery engines and farming tools and implements.

Anyone can bring an item for the vintage display and entries are accepted up until noon on the threshing day.

To mark the start to another great year, the committee members and our hard working threshing crew will be starting to cut the oats for the Threshing on the day. The committee would like to thank Joe Dempsey and his family for the continued support and commitment they have offered over the years, as without the cutting of the corn and this kind donation each year, the main event would be unable to proceed.

The committee would like to thank all who continue to make the Threshing Festival a successful event. To all our loyal sponsors and volunteers who come out each year to play their part.

So come join us on Sunday the 28th August for a great day for young and old. You won’t be disappointed. More information is available on our Facebook Page.
