'CONNECT' Family Fun Day

Rockwell hosts Girl Guides camp

The countdown to next year’s international Guide camp at Rockwell College is underway following Sunday's launch at Irish Girl Guides’ CONNECT Family Fun Day.

Girl Guide leaders were delighted that dozens of local families braved the elements to join them for the day's fun activities, which included bouncy castles, treasure hunts, face-painting and a mini-Olympics.

Irish Girl Guides (IGG) leaders from around the country also attended with their families and enjoyed the opportunity to explore the site where they will be camping with their Guides next summer.

“The leaders and Girls Guides were all very impressed with Rockwell and its facilities and can’t wait for next year’s camp IGGNITE 2017,” said Camp Chief Jenny Gannon. “The grounds are perfect for camping and having a lake is a definite bonus as the girls will have the opportunity to kayak and do other water-based activities.”

“We will have up to 1,500 Girl Guides (age 10-16) camping for the week starting from 30 July 2017 and we want to give them a fun and memorable experience,” says Jenny. “As well as the water sports and all the many other fun activities we will arrange for them, there will be a serious side to the camp too. Through a variety of activities and challenges, the girls will learn about the Sustainable Development Goals and they will be encouraged to explore ways that they can make a difference in their local communities and overseas.

“Guiding helps girls develop interpersonal skills and a social and environmental conscience while taking part in team-building and problem-solving games and challenges. Girls also learn how to speak out on issues that concern them and to inspire others to take action too.

“The girls will also be able to make friends with other Guides from around the world. We have heard from Guides in the UK, Canada, USA, Zambia, India, Georgia, Zimbabwe, Australia and Slovakia who are interested in attending and we look forward to giving them all a warm Irish welcome.”

Jenny was delighted that so many members of the local community joined them for yesterday’s CONNECT Family Fun Day.

“We hold an international camp every five years and we always like to connect with local people and local businesses before and during the camp,” she said. “We look forward to continued engagement with the local community over the course of the next year.”

Irish Girl Guides welcomes new members from age 5 and adult volunteer leaders from age 18. See for further information or tel: 01 6683898.
