Peace Campaigner addresses Conference

The Hon. Secretary of Tipperary Peace Convention, Martin Quinn, was one of the Guest Speakers at the Global Peace Leadership Conference which took place in Queen's University Belfast from September 10th - September 13th. The conference was organized by the Global Peace Foundation, in partnership with Co-operation Ireland and the Senator George J Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice at Queens University Belfast.

The three-day conference convened a unique stakeholder group to examine the urgent ethical challenges of our time and to advance models of peacebuilding. Martin delivered a presentation called 'The Tipperary Experience', which outlined the role that the Convention has played for over 30 years in promoting peace and reconciliation. He outlined the reasons for the setting up of the Convention and the history of the song "It's a long way to Tipperary", and explained how the organisation was now recognised world wide through the awarding annually of the Tipperary International Peace Award. Martin stated that the US Sec. of State, John Kerry, will travel to Tipperary shortly to receive the 2015 Tipperary International Peace Award. Belfast was seen as an ideal location for the conference in which delegates could seek to address issues from identity-based conflicts to the refugee crisis, migration, and building social cohesion.
