Lidl on the double

Planning Application

Lidl on the double

Discount retail chain Lidl is planning to double the size of its supermarket in Tipperary Town, according to a planning application submitted to the Co. Council.

Lidl Ireland Gmbh has lodged a planning application seeking permission to demolish its existing 1,340 sq.m. discount foodstore at Bank Place, Tipperary and replace it with a 2,674 sq.m. licensed discount foodstore with 141 car parking spaces.

The company proposes the new store will be range from one to two storeys in height. The planning application details that the store will include are an off-licence, bakery, entrance pod, staff facilities, offices, storage area, a plant room, delivery room and trolley bay. Eight bicycle spaces are proposed in addition to the car parking spaces.

Lidl Gmbh proposes that the main vehicle and pedestrian access to the new supermarket will be maintained via the existing site entrance onto Bank Place.

The planning application was submitted to the Co. Council on August 30. Tipperary Co. Council is due to reach a decision on whether to approve, reject or seek further information on the application on October 24.

Lidl has in the past year significantly expanded its Clonmel discount store. Like the plan for its Tipperary Town branch, the company demolished its existing smaller store on the David Road and replaced it with a new larger premises.
