North Tipperary 1916 – 2016 Scout Commemoration

North Tipperary 1916 – 2016 Scout Commemoration

Saturday 8th October is a date that will remain as a highlight for many scouts in North Tipperary Region.

Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Venture and Rover Scouts all participated in the receipt of the Tricolour from Private Helen O’Dwyer, Limerick Barracks, on Saturday last.

The occasion was marked by a procession from the Plaza, Main Street, Cashel to the Rock of Cashel via Dominic Street. The procession was led by a lone piper, Billy Bob O’Dwyer, who piped so beautifully all the way to the Rock followed by the Flag Colour Party from Cashel – James Laffey, Bobby Coleman and Tobias Lenehan - who carried the flags with dignity and solemnity.

The ceremony was held in the North Transept of the Rock with scouts from Cashel, Clonoulty, Tipperary and Thurles in attendance. Following the Proclamation read by Joseph Kearney, his sister Edel Kearney invited members from each group to receive the flag from Private Helen O’Dwyer.

A Beaver, Cub, and Scout stepped forward to receive the tricolour for each group. Amhrán na bhFiann was sung beautifully by Clara May Hinchey. Kay Kearney from Clonoulty thanked everyone for their participation, making special reference to Pauline Ryan from the OPW for her kind assistance in enabling us to hold the ceremony on the Rock and also the staff of the Rock of Cashel for their help and consideration. This was followed by a lovely interpretation of “Grace” sung once more by Clara.

A special thanks to Private Helen O’Dwyer a native of Cashel who took time from her busy schedule to mark this occasion with dignity. There is much credit due to all who participated. However, special mention must be made of the children. Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Venture and Rover Scouts should be very proud of their participation. As leaders, we are assured of the fact that Scouting in North Tipperary has a bright future in the hands of these young people.
