'Very positive climate' in Mt. Bruis

A Whole School Evaluation (WSE) has found the overall quality of teaching in Mt Bruis primary school, west Tipperary, to be “very good”.

Mount Bruis NS is a rural, co-educational, primary school under the patronage of the Catholic Archbishop of Cashel and Emly.

The school has three mainstream teachers, a learning support teacher and a part-time resource teacher. Attendance levels for the sixty pupils enrolled are “very good”.

A Dept. of Education Inspector carried out the WSE on all aspects of learning and teaching, on May 18th, and the results were published on Sept. 26th.

The evaluation has found: “a very positive climate, which is characterised by a sense of community, permeates the life of the school.The overall learning achievements of the pupils are very good. The overall quality of teaching is very good and teachers are committed to extending and developing their practice. The introduction of Aistear: the Early Childhood Curriculum Framework provides an opportunity to focus on the achievement of specific language learning goals. The ancillary staff gives dedicated support to the school. In Irish, more use should be made of both real books and free writing. The pupils are very well behaved and display high levels of engagement in their learning. The board of management and the parents’ association work industriously to support the school. The principal demonstrates very good school leadership and has a very clear vision for the development of education in the school. The school has engaged positively with the school self-evaluation (SSE) process.”

The following main recommendations are made: “An enhanced focus on further developing the learning goals for communication in the Aistear Framework would enrich the effectiveness of this initiative in the school. In Irish, pupils should read more real books and have more opportunities to write independently. It is now opportune to review the duties assigned to in-school management so as to incorporate a stronger focus on curriculum related responsibilities.”

The report concluded: “The school’s capacity to develop further is very good.”
