Healthy Eating Week took place in Cashel Community School from Tuesday, October 4, to Friday 7th.
The aims of the week were to promote healthy food options and to create an awareness of the benefits of exercise. This echoed the recently launched ‘A Healthy Weight For Ireland Obesity Policy and Action Plan’ by the Department of Health.
During the week healthy food samples were distributed to all students. A lecturer from LIT Thurles gave a talk on Nutrition and Sport for students involved in senior sports teams. Also a dietician gave a presentation to all senior Home Economics classes on making healthy food choices incorporating recent research.
First Year classes participated in ‘the healthiest lunchbox’ competition. TY mini company sold healthy snacks at break time daily. TY students took part in fitness classes provided by B2A Gym and the school’s PE Department organised a ‘Drop everything and Walk/Run’ for 1st, 2nd and 3rd year classes.
One of the highlights of the week was the ‘Teacher’s Obstacle Race’ which took place at lunchtime on Friday. This involved two teams of seven teachers who had to overcome various obstacles, cheered on by their students. The winning team, after a steward’s enquiry was led by Mr. Trevor Galvin.
The Healthy Eating Committee is most grateful to all sponsors, including The Bakehouse, Joe Ahern, Glanbia, Ely’s Centra, Hayes Farm Two Mile Borris, LIT Thurles, Tipperary Spring Water, Super Valu, The Apple Farm Cahir, Bord Bia, Martin O'Dwyer, Una O'Dwyer, Paddy O'Dwyer Butchers and Grogans who provided milk, water, yoghurt, salads, fruit, cheese and many more foods and to the fitness instructor and nutritionist who gave their time voluntarily to highlight the importance of healthy eating and lifestyle.
