Nenagh to get new indoor community market

Nenagh is to get a new indoor market selling handcrafted goods and local foodstuffs.

The market, which opens this Saturday, November 5, in the New Institute, is being set up as a community project, with stallholders selling hand crafted or cooked items, antiques, retro, upcycling and the like, according to organiser Gayle Fone.

It is being funded entirely by the rental income from the stalls, and any profit is ploughed back into the project for development and expansion.

Rental income is kept deliberately low to enable small manufacturers to obtain High Street profile at a very low cost.

The market will open three days per week - Friday, Saturday and Sunday - from 10am to 6pm in the summer and 10am to 5pm in the winter. Sunday opening is 10am to 4pm throughout the year. The intention of the market is to allow small manufacturers the possibility of three days per week income, using the remainder of the time to make or source stock.

In addition to the stalls, they hope to have beverages and snacks on the go, a book nook, seating for people to sit and read, chat, doze or whatever they feel they need to do.

The market will be opened by Tipperary TD Alan Kelly at 10am this Saturday.

The Community Project will also hold workshops from basic computers, driving theory and languages to yoga, meditation, arts and crafts and the like, on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during the daytime and evening to allow people with schoolchildren and jobs to be able to access them. Fees are kept deliberately low in order that a wider section of the community may benefit from the educational and social elements.
