Maggie Butler and her son Alex after she accepted the Tipperary Carer of the Year award.
Killenaule’s Maggie Butler was presented with the Tipperary Carer of the Year Award 2016 at a special ceremony in Clonmel Town Hall on Friday morning.
Afterwards, the mother of five chatted with The Nationalist about caring for her five year old son Alex who has spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy and epilepsy.
Family Carers Ireland area manager Cllr. Richie Molloy, Independent TD Mattie McGrath and Mayor of the Clonmel/Cahir Borough District Cllr. Andy Moloney offered their congratulations to Maggie, while also highlighting the lack of resources available to carers of children with special needs.
Cllr Molloy paid warm tribute to Maggie for her wonderful care of Alex and said she was a hugely deserving winner of the top Carer award.
However he stressed that carers need better support, especially when caring for children with such special needs as Alex has.
Maggie was presented with her award by Mayor Andy Moloney who joined in the tributes to Maggie.
And there was a special welcome for Alex to the event in Clonmel Town Hall where he thoroughly enjoyed the proceedings.
