Tipperary TD, Jackie Cahill has said that the decision to not include Semple Stadium in Thurles in the list of proposed grounds for the Ireland 2023 Rugby World Cup bid is deeply disappointing for the town, and local businesses.
The Thurles based TD said “Semple Stadium is the largest GAA stadium in Munster, with countless years’ experience in in hosting big games and big crowds. It’s incredibly disappointing that it has been excluded, and this decision will be a significant blow to the town, and its businesses.
Thurles is uniquely situated, and suitable, for hosting a Rugby World Cup game, with access to both the national motorway network and a mainline rail service running through the centre of the town ensuring ease of connectivity.
“This was an ideal opportunity to showcase the best of Thurles, to the world and not just Ireland. Businesses would have had a major boom period, especially hotels, bars, restaurants and shops.”
“As the local TD, I will continue to promote Thurles as a great town to live, work and do business in. We have a lot to offer, and we will get over this setback,” concluded Cahill.
