Nenagh gets into Christmas spirit as lights switched

Nenagh begins its countdown to Christmas this Saturday, December 3, with the switching on of the town's Christmas lights at Banba Square.

The event will kick off at 4pm with music from the local Comhaltas group, followed by Nenagh Brass Band who will herald the ceremony which is scheduled for 5pm.

Santa comes to Nenagh Castle for the first time in 1,000 years. This Saturday and Sunday, he will bring lots of cheer and presents to children - but you better hurry up as admission is by ticket only, which must be purchased by this Friday from DK Travel on Silver Street. Tickets cost €2 with a maximum of €5 per family.

Shops will be vying with each other for the title of Best Dressed Window in the Careys Glass Christmas Window competition. The public can get their chance to see if they can guess the winner and be in with the chance of winning €250.

Chamber president Denis Finnerty urged people to get involved in all the upcoming activities and appealed to people to shop local, pointing out that there will be €4,000 worth of prizes up for grabs in the Shop Local / Win Big promotion.

Cllr Hughie McGrath welcomed the council's decision to give free parking in the town's car parks each Saturday in December and to allow free parking in all car parks from December 17 to December 29. He also urged people to shop local, especially in light of the difficulties faced by traders during the pipe laying work.
