Cashel Lions Club Christmas time

Busy weeks ahead for good causes

Cashel Lions Club Christmas time

Third World Fast

The members of the Cashel Lions Club have a busy few weeks ahead commencing with the Third World Fast this coming Saturday between 9 am and 6 pm in the streets of Cashel.

This is an annual event, which takes place close to Christmas in which the Lions Club give the people of Cashel and District an opportunity to remember others in Third World countries, who don’t have much to cheer about at this time of the year.

This project is close to forty years in existence having begun in the late nineteen seventies to fund volunteers going to African countries. The fast has always been successful with the townspeople being unfailing in their generosity. The Lions believe that the public will be equally generous on this occasion.

Visit to St. Patrick’s

Lions members visit the patients in St. Patrick’s Hospital on the Sunday before Christmas. This year’s visit takes place on Sunday next. The members gather in the hospital before 2 pm to bring refreshments, music and festive song, as well as plenty of good cheer to the patients. They are usually accompanied by musicians, choirs and singers as they travel through the wards. In many cases the patients join in with their favourite song and enjoy the occasion that brings their minds back to younger days. The Lions enjoy the occasion enormously and hope that their visit will liven up the day for the patients as well as wishing them the best for the festive season.

Distribution of Hampers

The Lions club distribute a number of food hampers and vouchers in the days before Christmas. The food collection, organised by Tesco recently and manned by the Lions was well supported and the club would like to thank all those who contributed. As a result it will be possible to distribute more food hampers this year.

Christmas Day Dinners

Christmas can be a lonely time for some, who can find themselves alone on a day when the vast majority are enjoying themselves in a family environment. The Lions have been providing a hot meal and dessert for a number of such people over a long number of years and they will provide this service again this year.

The meals they provide are heated in Our Lady’s Hospital – and theLions are very grateful to the management and staff for their co-operation - the desserts are supplied by the Lions themselves and the distribution takes place about 1pm on Christmas Day. It is a great service and very well received.

Senior Citizens Party

This year’s senior citizens party, organised by the Lions Club, will take place in Halla na Féile on Sunday, January 22, 2017. This is a major event for the club and is much enjoyed by all who attend it. There will be more information about It at a later date.
