Clonmel's train services will be discussed at the January meeting of Clonmel Borough District.
Officials from Irish Rail will attend the January meeting of Clonmel Borough District to discuss the town's train services, it has been confirmed.
The news has been welcomed by Cllr. Siobhan Ambrose, who has been campaigning for better rail services for the town for some time.
“It's a very positive move", she stated.
"We're in danger of losing the service on the Waterford to Limerick Junction line if Irish Rail keeps looking at the number of passengers travelling on that line.
"However a better service is needed to improve those figures".
At present only four passenger trains serve Clonmel, as well as Carrick-on-Suir, Cahir and Tipperary town, from Monday to Saturday.
Two trains connect with services to Dublin - the first leaves Clonmel at 8.10am, reaching Dublin's Hueston station at 10.45am; while a second train leaves Clonmel at 5.15pm, arriving at Hueston at 8pm.
Another train leaves Clonmel at 10.35am and arrives in Waterford at 11.25am, while another train leaves Clonmel at 7.35pm and gets into Waterford at 8.30pm.
After Christmas Saturday services may be affected due to upgrade works.
Cllr. Ambrose (above) says that this service isn't conducive to people travelling to work or doing business in Dublin or Waterford, or in any of the other towns served by those trains.
By contrast 19 Dublin-bound trains left Thurles each day and she said it was like "a Clonmel reunion on the platform", with so many people from the town availing of this service.
Clonmel is a regional town and needs a better rail service, she said.
