Tipperary independent TD Mattie McGrath has apologised to the chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment, Senator Catherine Noone, for remarks he made earlier today (Wednesday).
He had come under a barrage of criticism for a statment he made to reporters outside Dail Eireann.
While discussing the Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment with the media this morning, he said - "The fat lady hasn't sang here yet and I'm not talking about the chairperson of the committee or anybody like that."
There has been stinging criticism of his remarks from politicians and others, especially on social media.
Deputy McGrath had added after his 'fat lady' remark - "I'm just saying that as an old saying. It's up to the electorate.
"And I look forward with all my colleagues here I'm sure being taking place throughout the country. And if there's is a referendum the people will have the final say, thankfully to repeal the Eighth or otherwise."
He has since contacted Senator Noone with an apology and a spokesman for the Tipperary TD said that she had accepted it.
