Red Cross in Co. Tipperary assist with response to Storm Emma

As the county was blanketed in snow Red Cross units across the county worked with health service personnel using Red Cross 4x4 ambulances to aid isolated communities in very challenging circumstances in the snow.

The Irish Red Cross has a fleet of 14 vehicles in County Tipperary and three of these are 4 wheel drive ambulances based in Cashel, Tipperary Town and Roscrea respectively. With road conditions, especially on tertiary roads, being impassible for many cars and standard road ambulances, these 4 wheel drive ambulances responded to over 11 calls across the county in the days past.

Among the calls carried out by the Red Cross included the Nenagh Red Cross Unit transporting a patient by ambulance at the request of the State services from Borrisokane to University Hospital Limerick after a local digger cleared a route to the patient's house. Other Red Cross calls including taking by 4x4 ambulance a palliative care nurse to an essential call in the Ardfinnan area, taking a theatre nurse to Nenagh General Hospital, transporting a public health nurse on upland calls in the Thurles district, and transporting a public health nurse in the Ballingarry / The Commons district and offering 4x4 transport to a specialist Carer in the Dundrum area. In addition the Clonmel Branch assisted with welfare calls and household contacts and Nenagh Branch transported people to a scheduled trad session in Nenagh.

John Ryan, County Officer for Red Cross Units, said that the snows the county had seen were the "worst for a generation" and he paid tribute to the Red Cross volunteers working with the health and Ambulance services and communities in Tipperary in such difficulty conditions. He said the 4 x 4 ambulances "really made a difference" as some time sensitive care clients living in rural areas would not have gotten essential nursing care without these three Red Cross 4x4 vehicles based in Co Tipperary and their local volunteer crews.
