Business author and consultant Gabrielle O'Donovan with her recently-released book, ‘Making Organisational Change Stick'.
Clonmel business author and consultant, Gabrielle O’Donovan, has launched her third Change Management book, ‘Making Organisational Change Stick' (Routledge, 2018).
In her book, Gabrielle observes that, many years ago, any change to every work routine was typically introduced by management as part of daily operations.
But in the last two decades, she says that because there is such a push to get business results quickly and save costs, special projects – which run in parallel with daily operations for a particular timeframe– have been the preferred choice for business leaders introducing change to business.
"For example, when Terminal 2 was being built at Dublin Airport, and while airport staff did their day jobs and got passengers to where they were going, a special 'Terminal 2 project' ran in parallel", she says.
Gabrielle, who is based in London, was the Change Consultant for the building of Terminal 2 at Dublin Airport.
She is the daughter of Christine O’Donovan (neé Culligan) and the late Eamonn O’Donovan.
Despite the popularity of the project as a vehicle for introducing change, she says that research and experience shows that project failure rates run between 40%-70%, often because Project Management is focusing too much on creating the change and the logistics of that, and less about the people who will be expected to adopt and embed the change.
"That is where the Change Management discipline comes in", she states.
In ‘Making Organisational Change Stick’, Gabrielle makes the case for partnering Project Management with Change Management to secure business benefits.
"This involves ensuring that stakeholders and end-users understand what is changing, and input into plans and designs so that it really does make sense and meet business needs, know what the change means for them and how they can manage any impact.
"Also, they must have the knowledge and skills to adopt the change and embed it into everyday operations".
Gabrielle developed her initial repertoire of skills by working on a range of major initiatives for Cathay Pacific Airways, Hong Kong during the 1990s.
Her HSBC culture change programme 'Together, We Win!' won numerous awards (including an ASTD Excellence in Practice Award in 2005) and her articles have been published in Corporate Governance International, Banking Today and Best Practices Management.
She has served as Associate Professor at Danube University, Austria for their MBA programme and held a similar post at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University for four years.
Her book 'The Corporate Culture Handbook' (Liffey Press, 2006) was rated in "the top percentage of best business books for 2006" by Business Book Review, USA.
In 2015 INSEAD University, France translated a large section of this book as course material for one of their executive development programmes.
She is also author of 'Solvency II:Stakeholder Communications and Change'.
Gabrielle is a member of numerous professional societies including the Society of Authors, the Institute of Management Consultants, the Strategic Planning Society and the Association of Change Management Professionals (ACMP).
