Irish Water's Tipperary water abstraction plan to feature on Prime Time

Irish Water plans to siphon water from Lough Derg is to feature on Prime Time this Tuesday

RTE television's Prime Time will examine Irish Water's proposal to take water from Lough Derg and pump it to Dublin to solve what it says is a water problem in the capital and surrounding counties.

Lawyer Emma Kennedy, researcher for River Shannon Protection Alliance, who is based in Zurich, will argue the case against the proposed abstraction of 330 million litres per day from the Shannon to the East Coast.

The project is estimated to cost up to €1.2bn and would see water being pumped to Birdhill and on to Cloughjordan before using gravity to take it to a new reservoir outside Dublin.

Ms Kennedy has analysed Irish water's published reports from day one and has stated Irish Water's plan is based on "miscalculations and speculative figures".

Ms Kennedy argues that there would be no need for the 172km long pipe if money was spent on fixing the major leakages in Dublin's Victorian water supply system.

Prime Time is on RTE1 at 9.35pm this Tuesday, March 27.
