Darkness into Light Thurles proves a major success with 1,500 participants

Darkness into Light proved to be a major success in Thurles on Saturday morning with the second annual event attracting a huge attendance.

The 1,500 who took part came from far and wide in jovial spirit and with their own intentions as the symbolic journey from darkness into light commenced at The Dome, Semple Stadium at 4:15am.

Yes, it was cold, but at least it was dry and participants didn't mind wrapping up with the unique atmosphere helping to warm the heart and keep everyone moving in the right direction.

The route over the Jimmy Doyle bridge into the town centre and back to Semple Stadium was completed one step at a time and upon return to Ardan Ui Riain, there was a welcome cuppa and refreshments for everyone.

“It was a great success and we were thrilled that so many came out, participated and supported the event. This was only our second year and we are learning all the time. Already we are planning for next year and we hope to build on this and make it bigger and better again. Right now, we would like to thank all those who turned out and helped in any way leading up to the event and on the night,” Chairman of Thurles DIL Jonathan Gleeson said.

The commitee and helpers are to be commended for their great efforts to rally the troops and bring so many people together on the night. Pieta House has certainly benefited from their efforts, but so too have all those who will avail of their services, and all those who donned the runners on the night.

Congratulations to all involved.
