The Holy Year Cross is shining brighter than ever over Clonmel

Improvements costing in the region of €1,500 are being carried out on the Holy Year Cross overlooking Clonmel from the foothills of the Comeragh mountains.

The aluminium from the cross was removed and the steel structure cleaned and painted, before a high spec, luminous coating was placed on the aluminium, which was then re-fitted to the front of the cross.

This new coating not only enhances the appearance of the cross but projects more light from the structure, ensuring that it is clearly visible from over a wide area.

Bulbs and parts of the lamp fittings that illuminate the cross have also been replaced. One of the towers in the area was also re-plastered.

The other concrete structures will be power-washed and painted and the area tidied up in good time for the annual Mass, which will be celebrated at 11am on Bank Holiday Monday, August 6.

ORIGINAL CROSS ERECTED IN 1950

The original cross was erected to celebrate the Holy Year in 1950.

Since then a Mass has been celebrated on the site at Cnoc a Chomortais, or Scrouthea Hill, on each August Bank Holiday Monday; while the cross and the area surrounding it has been maintained by a dedicated voluntary committee based at the Old Bridge.

The Mass is attended by the District Mayor, or Deputy Mayor, and members of Clonmel Borough District; and hundreds of people from the town and surrounding area, as well as visitors to the area, who faithfully make the annual pilgrimage.

As well as the celebration of the Mass it’s a day out for all the family and an occasion enjoyed by people of all ages.

The cross was illuminated to celebrate the arrival of the new Millennium 18 years ago, and the old coating had been in place since 2000.

The recent improvements were paid for from donations made at the annual Mass.

Anyone who wants to volunteer and help in the general clean-up of the area in the next couple of weeks is more than welcome to do so.

Anyone interested in lending a hand should contact committee member Sean Prendergast on 087-9204213.
