Two Clonmel men have been honoured for their work on board an Irish naval vessel that is tackling human smuggling in the Mediterranean.
Able Seaman Shane Whyte and Lieutenant (N.S.) Gavin Pyke, Executive Officer, both serving on board the Irish Naval Service ship L.É. JAMES JOYCE received CSDP Medals for their participation in EU NAVFOR MED Operation Sophia, whilst berthed in Valletta, Malta on 5th September.
The L.É. JAMES JOYCE has been operating in the South Central Mediterranean disrupting the human smuggling business model since the beginning July and will return to Ireland at the end of October.
Gavin is a Clonmel native and Shane is originally from Ballymacarbry but living in Clonmel.
