Roscrea Street League came to an end on September 1st with Finals Day taking place in Killavilla FC.
It was a brilliant day, with 10 estates taking part and eight teams going out to see which Estate would be the victor.
This year a total number of 353 children took part from age 3 to 13. Sheenane Juniors were league winners with The Lane becoming Senior League winners.
We kicked off at 11am for a day of fun and sport, each child coming out full of passion for their team and all eyeing the Thorphy’s Cup on display, and willing each other on.
First game of the day was the Plaque with CMCB United taking the Junior and Sheehane taking the Senior plaques.
The Lane were Junior Plate winners while Ard Na Greine/Tullaskeagh were Senior Plate Winners. The Shield were next with Gleann Glas Junior taking it, and CMBC Senior Shield winners.
The Big Final was the Cup with it going to penalties in both finals. Kennedy Park Juniors were the winners second year running and Ashbury Senior retaining the Senior Cup.
All matches were brilliant and the kids couldn’t play any harder and the support was exceptional.
We had four most improved players: for the Juniors were Tierna McLoughlin CMBC and Ben Mitchell, for the Ashbury Seniors were Ruby Mitchell Kennedy Park and Gary Mato.
The top goal scorers was a hard fought battle, but Bo Feehan of Gleann Glas ran away with the Junior title scoring a massive 42 goals, with Robbie Tynan being the top goal scorer for Ashbury Seniors.
The referees who stepped up to each and every match played fair and made sure the children enjoyed it all times.
This year we were recognized by the FAI and we were delighted with the help and support James Scott gave us, including footballs courses and goalposts. We could not run this without the support and help from all the coaches and managers, parents and the children. We could not supply the children with gear or signage without the help of some of the people of Roscrea.
Our sponsors are very helpful and we appreciate all the help they give us to get the children out and active with sports. Glasses and the kits, shin guards, boots and trophies. Our street league signs to say we are all volunteers were donated by Sean and Niall O’Meara. Also, signage plaques for referees.
Special thanks to Roscrea Credit Union, Roscrea Lions Club, Killavilla,Denis Moloney and Brendan Moloney, NTLP Roscrea, Tipperary Sports Partnership and Sean Hogan who never missed a game for photos.
This is the second year of the street league and we never imagined it would be so successful or that the kids would enjoy it so much. Clubs in the town have seen an increase in children joining clubs due to them liking and getting out away from stresses of computers and homework. Their mental health is so important in these times and the mixing and making of new friends are the added bonuses of the league.
We would like to thank the children on their behavior, sense of humour and the get up and go that they have and for bringing all the communities and estates together, wishing all the children that have left us this year the very best of luck in their next stage of life and weknow we will miss you.
