Two new car parks and making Abbey Hill one-way to traffic are among the improvements proposed for the Carrickbeg neighbourhood of Carrick-on-Suir under an Active Travel planning application the council is proposing.
Residents, businesses and other interested groups in Carrickbeg have until this Friday, November 25 to submit their views on the Carrickbeg Active Travel Scheme Part 8 planning application to Tipperary County Council’s roads chief.
According to the council, the Active Travel Scheme’s goal is to provide a more attractive streetscape in Carrickbeg that improves mobility for all modes of transport and delivers continuous walking routes with safe crossing points at desired locations.
Carrickbeg is one of the most historic parts of Carrick-on-Suir and its narrow streets can become quite congested with traffic at busy times.
This is compounded by the absence of a public car park, which means vehicle owners doing business in local shops or attending events in the community have no option but to park on the side of the street or road.
To address these problems, the Active Travel Scheme proposes the creation of a 24-space car park on a site between the Waterford Road and Quay beside the grain stores of the Glanbia Co-Op.
A second 9-space car park is proposed further down on a vacant site on the opposite side of the Waterford Road.
The Active Travel Scheme also proposes making a 40m section of the Waterford Road one-way westbound from its junction with Abbey Hill/ Bridge St. to the 24 space-car park entrance.
And it proposes making Abbey Hill one-way south bound from its junction with Bridge Street to its junction with Corpse Road.
Widening of footpaths and the construction of new footpaths and reducing road carriageway widths are proposed along with the installation of new pedestrian crossings at the entrance to the Old Bridge, on the Waterford Road and at the top of Abbey Hill. Existing pedestrian crossings are to be improved.
The scheme also proposes improvements to public lighting on Carrickbeg’s existing streets as well as public lighting in the two new car parks.
PLANS ON DISPLAY
The plans for the Carrickbeg Active Travel Scheme were on public display in Carrick Municipal District’s offices at Carrick Town Hall and in Tipperary County Council’s Civic Offices in Clonmel between October 12 and November 10.
They can still be viewed online on Tipperary County Council’s website.
