Thousands gathered in Carrick-on-Suir and surrounding villages last Saturday evening to greet a massive cavalcade of tractors lit up with twinkling fairy lights.
The ninth annual Christmas Tractors of Carrick-on-Suir Parade featured 50 illuminated tractors from all over the country as well as a strong contingent of local entrants.
The parade, organised by the Crop Cruisers group of tractor and machinery enthusiasts, did a tour of communities in Carrick’s hinterland before reaching the town. The procession of dazzling tractors started in Piltown, travelled to Portlaw and onto Clonea-Power and Rathgormack before entering Carrick-on-Suir via the Coolnamuck Road and crossing Dillon Bridge to the expectant crowds gathered in the town centre.
Stuart Downie of the Crop Cruisers said this was their biggest parade yet.
“Massive crowds came out to see it everywhere we went. It was crazy,” said the farmer from Tybroughney, Carrick.
Luckily the weather remained fine for most of the pageant, with only some rain experienced in Portlaw.
The parade was in aid of the Clare’s Wish Foundation, a charity that fulfils the wishes of adults who are suffering from terminal illnesses.
Stuart said they don’t yet have a final tally of how much the event raised for the foundation as money is still coming in.
He criticised a number of tractor drivers who joined the parade unofficially without paying the registration fee, which is donated to the charity.
The parade concluded at the New Street Car Park opposite Carrick-on-Suir Town Hall where there were amusements for children and a chance for people to view the tractors close-up.
Stuart thanked Carrick Municipal District Cathaoirleach Cllr David Dunne and Carrick MD for their help and support for the event.
He paid tribute to all the tractor drivers who participated in the parade, and all who came out to watch it and supported the Clare’s Wish Foundation appeal.
He confirmed the parade will be back again next Christmas.
“Next year will be the big one. It will be our 10th parade and it’s going to be massive,” he promised.
