A cheque for over 50,000 euros will be presented to “Fighting Blindness” on this Saturday, November 19th in Upperchurch Community Hall at 9 p.m.
This money was raised by the Upperchurch - Drombane community over a weekend of events including soccer matches, tug-of-war competitions, a 70km and 20km cycle and a series of walks on the 9th and 10th October. Four bands also played for free as part of the weekend entertainment.
The fundraiser was a huge success and raised over 50,000 euros. All the money raised goes to funding research into fighting blindness and particularly finding a cure for Lebers Optic Neuropathy, a debilitating illness which destroys one’s central vision. A young member of our community suffers from this condition and this spurred the local community into action.
On behalf of the Upperchurch - Drombane Fighting Blindness committee I would like to thank all those people who gave so freely of their time, energy and money to raise such a fantastic amount and to the local businesses and the wider community who made this fundraiser such an astonishing success.
Richard Ryan. (Secretary of the committee).
