From the outset I would like to register my serious disappointment that you have not seen fit to reply to my emails and letter concerning the proposed abortion bill. In a democracy the least we should be afforded from our elected representatives is the courtesy of a reply.
However I would like to address some points our government leaders have made.
• They state that the aim of the Government is to clarify and give legal certainty as to when abortion is permissable.
The Bill gives no extra clarity as to medical treatment.
The Taoiseach claims that the Bill doesn’t change the position but he is here engaging in a tricky use of language.
The Bill changes the position in practice in a very profound way. It will force hospitals that respect the equality and dignity of mother and child to introduce facilities for the abortion by obstetricians of healthy babies. The mothers will be physically healthy but suicidal and under this Bill will be allowed abortions right up to the full term of pregnancy.
• They state that the Government will ensure that the pro
cess takes full account of the equal right to life of the unborn child.
But what of the position in relation to the ground of suicidal ideation?
The Bill contains no time limits for abortion in the case of a suicidal pregnant woman. This could mean that a child would be killed a day or even hours before he/she would be born naturally. What an abomination!
• They also state that suicide is already a ground for abortion. Consultant perinatal psychiatrist Dr John Sheehan told TDs and Senators that “psychiatrists are doctors not judges. Psychiatrists are being asked to determine if there is a real and substantial risk to the life of the mother in order that the mother may procure an abortion. I think that many Irish psychiatrists will not see this as their role as medical practitioners. The role could be construed as making psychiatrists the gatekeepers to abortion.”
It is time for some plain talking. Everybody knows that the proposed law is the product of political expediency. We now know that for the Labour Party it is an important and necessary step on a sure road to wide-ranging abortion.
If you want to know what commonly happens to the preborn baby while getting aborted, watch Silent Scream or Eclipse of Reason films on YouTube. There would be public outrage were the same procedure done to an animal. Those who are lawyers know that this Bill is not legally required. Those who are doctors know that it is not
medically necessary. And those who are psychiatrists know that it is actually damaging to the welfare of some of their patients. This Bill is not about protecting womens lives. It is about introducing abortion. This Bill, if passed in its present form, will allow wide ranging abortion in a very short few years and will write the death sentence for thousands of unborn children right up to their expected date of birth. It will bring about a
huge cultural change because what will be seen as ‘legal’ will become accepted as normal and right. As a constituent of North Tipperary I beg you to oppose it vehemently.
