What a wonderful occasion the benefit night at Clonmel Greyhound Track on Sunday turned out to be.
The night was in aid of the Christian Flannery Foundation Fund with proceeds going to Christian’s family and also to Temple Street children’s hospital.
Seven year old Christian was a huge fan of both greyhounds and the GAA but was tragically killed following an accident while out with his greyhounds.
But his memory lives on after such a s hort life and the attendance on Sunday shows how fondly he is remembered.
The track has seldom if ever seen such a bumper attendance.
This not just a tribute to Christian and his family but to the community spirit shown by all who attended.
They were not only supporting Christian’s grieving family but the hospital where he was so well cared for before his death.
At a time when many people have problems of their own, it was heartening to see such a public outpouring of support.
It was similar to the attitude shown by Tipperary hurler Eoin Kelly. The All Ireland winning captain had been Christian’s hero and Eoin visited the young Clerihan boy in hospital before his death. It’s great to see people still care.
