Clonmel man Ray Parle, Principal Environmental Health Officer, has won a top health safety award.

The EHAI Excellence Award (the Con Healy Medal) for Environmental Health Professional of the Year is granted for demonstration of excellence in professional practice.

It is awarded in memory of the late Environmental Health Officer Con Healy, who for many years epitomised such excellence.

The award highlights outstanding contributions or achievements or innovations in the environmental health field by Environmental Health Officers or others and promotes increased awareness within our community of the important role played by environmental health.

From early in his career as a food control officer, Ray rose quickly through the ranks to become a Senior EHO in Clonmel and subsequently a Principal in Waterford.

Today, a Principal for twenty years, he presides over the Clonmel offices of South Tipperary.

He completed a Masters in Environmental Health with DIT for which he received the ‘Gold Medal’ (another award – his mantelpiece must be heaving) the highest honour the college could bestow.

In the course of his professional career Ray has contributed hugely to many committees, most notably the ‘Expert body on Fluoride’ which brought down the level of fluoride in water supplies from 0.8-1mg/l to 0.6-0.8mg/l, a testament to his dedication.

He has also forged excellent relationships with the agencies the Environmental Health Service is required to work with on a daily basis including Waterford County council, the EPA and the FSAI.

These good relationships were formed out of respect for his expertise and his willingness to work with people to achieve a common goal ‘a better environment for all’.

The decision to grant the award to Ray was one that the Officer Board of the EHAI and his friends, colleagues and associates had no difficulty ratifying.
