The Further Education and Training (FET) Centre in Carrick-on-Suir was awarded the prestigious environmental symbol, the Green Flag, during a recent ceremony, becoming the first Tipperary Education and Training Board (ETB) FET Centre to receive the honour.

The FET Centre received its Green Flag during an event at Hotel Kilkenny on Tuesday, 9 May 2023, when it was represented by Alison Gaynor, Green Schools Coordinator, Fiona Hennessy, FET Centre Manager, and Carrick-on-Suir students Ashar Anwar and Adam Tobin.

The ceremony, hosted by An Taisce and Green Schools, saw primary and post-primary schools across Tipperary and Kilkenny, as well as Carrick-on-Suir FET Centre, receive Green Flags for their approach to environmental sustainability.

Carrick-on-Suir FET Centre received its honour for its approach to the theme of ‘Litter and Waste’, which is the first theme of the Green-Schools programme.

The theme is a great starting point for encouraging a sense of personal pride and responsibility in tackling two visible issues in schools and communities. The aim of this theme is to take an in-depth look at both litter and waste, and find ways to eliminate litter and reduce waste output.

The flag was raised on site in Carrick-on-Suir on Friday, 12 May, by VTOS learner Shane Nugent with Director of FET at Tipperary ETB, Colin Cummins, present on the day for the ceremony.

Tipperary Education and Training Board (ETB) is the statutory provider of education for county Tipperary, delivering a comprehensive range of quality education and training services to meet the needs of the community it serves.

Tipperary ETB is the Patron for one Community National School (CNS), one high-support school, one all-Irish post-primary (secondary) school, 10 post-primary schools, one specialist Post-Leaving Certificate (PLC) college, and four PLC colleges attached to its post-primary schools in Tipperary.

Tipperary ETB also manages dedicated Further Education & Training (FET) centres across Tipperary, including the state-of-the-art training facility at Archerstown, Thurles, as well as the delivery of Youthreach, Lifelong Learning and a wide range of education services for people of almost any age.

Established in 2013, Tipperary ETB is the amalgamation of the North Tipperary & South Tipperary Vocational Education Committees (VEC).
