The successful launch of a new Community Parent and Toddler Group, facilitated by the Community Mother Programme, located in the Church of the Resurrection Hall, Fethard Road, Clonmel was celebrated on Monday, November 21 by children, parents, carers and representatives of various agencies.
The Parent & Toddler Group has been meeting weekly since its first session on September 12 this year and has been well attended by parents, carers and their toddlers. The group is led by Community Mother Margaret and volunteer Patsy.
Babies, toddler, their parents/minders all benefit in various ways from attending a Parent & Toddler Group. Toddlers play with other children, enjoy sing-song and rhyme time, parents and carers have an opportunity to chat with one another, the Community Mother and volunteers, in an informal relaxed setting.
Parent & Toddler forms a stepping stone to pre-school and primary school for children. The Community Mother Programme set up their first community Parent & Toddler group in 2001 and to date there are four groups running. A need was identified for an additional Parent & Toddler group around the Fethard Road area by workers from HSE Primary Care services, Community Mothers Programme, Clonmel RAPID and the South Tipperary County Childcare Committee.
Funding to meet costs of setting up the new group was generously provided by Merck, Sharpe & Dohme, the Lions Club, County Childcare Committee and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. The premises located in the Church of the Resurrection was made available by Canon Brendan Crowley and the Ss Peter & Paul’s Parish Council.
The Church of the Resurrection Community Parent & Toddler group is open on Monday mornings 10 – 12 a.m. For further information, contact the Clonmel Community Mothers office at Tel. (052)6128199.
