Lecture on The Dirty War....
This month’s Lecture in IUNVA House, Clonmel is The Dirty War- Civil War in Lebanon 1975-76 by Guy Jones. The lecture will take place on Tuesday, 20th November at 8 pm
The Lebanese Civil War destabilised the country leading to the 1978 Israeli invasion and the deployment of Irish troops to the country as part of UNIFIL. Guy is Chairman of the Irish Lebanese Cultural Foundation. As per usual the Lecture will be held in IUNVA House at the Railway Station Clonmel next Tuesday night 20th November at 8pm. This Lecture will have particular relevance for many people from South Tipperary considering the numbers from the area that served in the Lebanon during their Military careers.
STMHS Trip to Dublin and Kildare
On the weekend of 29th/30th September a group from STMHS travelled to Dublin where we took part in the 1916 Rising Tour, visited Kilmainham Gaol, Arbour Hill Cemetery, Grangegorman and Glasnevin Cemeteries and Wolfe Tones Monument in Bodenstown County Kildare. This was a most enjoyable weekend and brought home to us how much there is to see from a Military History perspective in Dublin. We intend travelling there again sometime in 2013 to visit some more sites from the 1916 Rising and explore Glasnevin Cemetery some more. Our thanks to Eugene O’Keeffe and Michael Dolan for organising this Trip.
Kickham Barracks Monument
The Campaign to return CSM Felix Grants Memorial Plaque to Kickham Barracks continues apace, this Plaque has been installed in Sarsfield Barracks Limerick by the Army authorities without Planning Permission being sought or granted for its removal. Our position is that this Memorial must be returned to Kickham Barracks without delay and we are working with Clonmel Borough Council who are of the same mind as us in this respect to have this happen before the end of the year.
As part of our Campaign we have created an Information Booklet giving details of the Monuments and contact details for all Local Representatives so anyone interested can lobby them on behalf of us all. This information booklet can be downloaded from our website stmhs.ie
