Independent TD Mattie McGrath has welcomed the decision by Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton TD to extend the Fuel Allowance payment for another week during the cold spell of weather.
Deputy McGrath said: “As the present cold spell continues to impact on the lives of the older and more vulnerable members of our communities, I feel that this extension will greatly assist in providing them with the resources to ensure that they have sufficient fuel to keep warm.”
The Minister has agreed to keep the payment under review for the coming weeks and is open to extending the payment if the cold spell continues.
“This is a welcome decision and is definitely a step in the right direction. We all recognise that resources are scarce but it is important that we have a fuel allowance system that can be flexible to assist the elderly and vulnerable through extended cold spells and the fact that it will remain under review in the coming weeks will at least ease some of the fears of those who are struggling to meet the rising fuel costs,” concluded Deputy McGrath
