Victor Ortiz Dasi and Marie Shanahan in the 123.ie All Ireland Schools’ Track & Field Championships
A sun-drenched Tullamore on a clear Friday evening was the venue for the 123.ie All Ireland Schools’ Track & Field Championships as Tipperary athlete Marie Shanahan represented Coláiste Phobal Ros Cré and took to the field for the junior girls discus.
With her 1st throw of 33.70m, Marie was in first place at the end of round one. By the end of round three, she was still leading the group and qualified for an extra two throws.
Showing the true form of a champion, Marie went from strength to strength throwing 36.66m and 35.12m in her final two throws, deservedly took home the gold medal.
Soon afterwards, Marie took part in the hammer and while still on a high from her win in the discus, Marie threw well and finished in 8th place.
At the same time Victor Ortiz Dasi was competing in the minor boys long jump. Victor jumped well clearing 4.98m and was unfortunate to miss the cut for the additional two jumps.
He finished in 7th place overall, which is a fine achievement. Victor returned on Saturday morning for the 100m final. He finished 7th in a time of 12.72 seconds.
This year’s championships saw over 1,000 athletes from almost 400 schools compete across two days of compelling athletics competition, in both track and field.
Overall Coláiste Phobal Ros Cré had a fantastic year with competitors in the Munster Indoors, County, East Munster, and Munster finals all culminating in a great day at the All-Ireland in The Harriers Athletic Stadium, Tullamore.
Talent nurtured well bodes well for athletics in the county over the coming years.
