Fethard’s hostelries were buzzing on New Year’s Eve – maybe with the anticipation of leaving a year of recession behind and looking ahead to better times – either way the atmosphere was very positive as generations gathered together to ring in the New Year with style.
Large crowds of families and friends were about the town on New Year’s Eve and all joined hands at midnight with a blast of ‘Auld Lang Syne’ to say goodbye to 2013 and welcome a brand new 2014 and the hopes that it brings
While many of the season’s overseas visitors had already left for their adopted homes but that didn’t deter those who were left.
To quote Leonard Cohen from his ‘Anthem’ song:
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in.
There is a glimmer of light that 2014 will also start the reversal of our current recession and that life at home and away will at least begin to get better for us all. With that in mind we welcome the New Year enthusiastically.
