A Tipperary man is bringing the girls soccer team that he coaches in California to Ireland next week to play games in Tipperary, Limerick and Dublin.
Angelo Fiorini, who is originally from Tipperary Town, is coach of the City SC soccer club in the city of Temecula.
The team that will visit Ireland is a combined group of Under 13 and Under 12 players.
They will arrive in Cahir next Monday, July 24, and will have a training session at Cahir Park that night.
The Mayor of Clonmel Richie Molloy will host a reception for the visitors in the Town Hall in Clonmel on Tuesday and later that evening they will play Tipperary Town FC in Tipperary at 7pm.
They will leave Cahir on Wednesday before playing four games over three days in the Treaty Cup at the University of Limerick.
Some sightseeing is planned between games and the group will visit Galway, the Aran Islands and the Cliffs of Moher over the weekend before finishing the trip in Dublin, where they will take on Granada FC.
Angelo Fiorini lived in Tipperary Town until he went to college in Limerick before moving to Dublin, Clonmel and eventually California in 2013.
His wife Janmarie works for Abbott Vascular and it was her job that brought the family, including the couple’s children Liliana and Alessio, to California.
Angelo says he was fortunate to be able to work remotely from California and he became involved in soccer coaching there, having spent some time as a director at the City SC club in Temecula. He has been coaching the team for three years.
His parents Helen and Alberto still live in Tipperary Town as does his sister Roberta. His other sister Palma lives in Cork. His wife’s family, the Becketts, live in Clonmel.
Angelo coaches the girls Under 13 team at City SC while the Under 12 team is coached by high school teacher Jessica Nelson, who is a native of Southern California.
Both teams play in the SoCal league at what is known as the Flight 1 level. Angelo’s team were State Cup finalists this year while Jessica’s team went one better last year when they won the State Cup.
The teams have also been successful in other tournaments such as the Golden State Challenge and Rebels Showcase.
The City SC players and coaches are wished an enjoyable trip to Ireland next week.
