The end-of-school bell was welcomed last Friday as it heralded the beginning of spring-time mid-term. That bell was particularly sweet music to the ears of the sixth year and third year students as it spelled the end of two weeks of intensive “pre” exams. They deserve a good rest this week.
The fifth year parent-teacher meeting will take place this coming Tuesday, February 19, from 4.15pm to 6.45pm. All parents/ guardians are encouraged to attend.
Girls Basketball Wins
The second year girls were excited in advance about their game against Presentation Clonmel, hoping to improve on the one-point defeat in their previous game. Venue was Monroe. Cashel started strongly by getting the first basket but Presentation were quick to reply, scoring the next two baskets. The game was tight throughout the first half and it ended 13 – 8 in favour of CCS.
The girls were excellent in the second half and scored some outstanding baskets. The team excelled in both defence and in attack, and ran out winners 29 – 16.
Cashel will next play Loreto Clonmel on Tuesday, February 19.

The first year girls’ basketballers also were in Monroe on Friday, February 8. They likewise were faced by Presentation Clonmel. Cashel had high expectations, after winning their most recent game. Presentation scored first but CCS responded well and went on to score 14 points in the first half, giving themselves a ten point advantage at the interval.
In the second half the Cashel girls worked very hard, both in defence and in offence, conceding just one basket to the Clonmel girls. Final score: CCS 21, Pres Clonmel 6. All the girls played well and are looking forward to their next game which will be against Loreto Clonmel.

The Rice Cup panel travelled to Ballinakill in Laois on Tuesday, February 5, for a return challenge game with Heywood Community School. Early morning snow meant that playing conditions were far from ideal. However, both team set to it with a will. During the first half Cashel lost Eoghan Connolly and Colin Ryan to injury and Alan O’Donnell to illness, which allowed the hosts to gain the upper hand close to half-time. They maintained that advantage in the second half and ran out winners by five points.
All members of the Cashel panel got to play, some in positions that would be new to them – all a learning experience.

The CCS U15 rugby team hosted Fermoy at Spafield Park on Thursday, February 7. The Cashel boys were up against a tough opposition and came short of a try. At one stage Cashel were down 5 -19 but they fought back and were unlucky not to close the gap much tighter that the final scoreline of 12-19. Players that stood out were Turlough Breen, Ben Blackford, Ciarán Davern, Brían Davern, Murragh McDermott, Seán O’Connell and Lee Barry.
