Work is being carried out in 58 houses around the town as part of an energy efficiency programme.
A number of those houses are located in Cooleens Close, Clonmel, an estate where residents have complained for years of dampness in their houses.
At the September meeting of Clonmel Borough Council Cllr.Brian O’Donnell said nobody listened when complaints were made by residents about dampness in their houses years ago, and it was only now the work was being done.
He felt that work should have been done years ago when the issues arose.
“People were told they were wrong when they made the complaints years ago”, he said.
“If the work is being carried out now in some of the houses why is it not being carried out in all of them,” asked Cllr.O’Donnell.
Jonathan Cooney, Borough Engineer said the 58 houses selected were located in a number of different areas around the town. The council was striving to make the houses as energy efficient as possible.
Cllr.O’Donnell said he could understand the work being carried out in old houses such as College Avenue and other areas but the houses in Cooleens Close were not that old.
“When people said those houses were damp we were told they were perfect and now we are told that the walls have to be insulated.
I am pleased to see them being done. This seems to be admitting that they were poor in the first place”, said Cllr.O’Donnell.
Sinead Carr, Borough Manager said that the upgrading of the houses to the most up-to-date energy efficiency standards was good news. The council needed to continuously upgrade to get the houses up to the best standards that apply to private houses.
The standards on energy efficiency had changed a lot over the years and the scheme was a good one.
