Tipperary athlete Sharlene Mawdsley takes Ireland into the final!

A superb pace of 50.14 by Sharlene Mawdsley was the fastest of any anchor runner at the World Championships in Budapest in the 4×400 metre mixed race this morning and the Tipperary starlet dragged her team through in the end.

Her quality took Ireland from eighth place to fourth place in their heat earlier which takes Ireland into the final. That takes place  later on tonight at 8.49pm.

In the heat the Newport Athletic Club ace received the baton in the difficult position of last overall, but she focused and powered at full pelt through the field to somehow finish 4th and despite her efforts her team were, at that stage, just outside the automatic qualifying places.

They did qualify for the final though as one of the fastest losers so the dynamic quartet of Jack Raftery, Sophie Becker, Chris O’Donnell and Tipperary athlete Mawdsley do make the grade for tonight’s final.

They finished overall with a time of 3:13.90 which was enough to push out Jamaica and put in Ireland as the eighth-fastest qualifier.
