Carrick Town Council is seeking clarification from Communications, Energy & Natural Resources Minister Pat Rabbitte over whether Grid Link can be placed underground or not.
Councillors agreed at their meeting last week to Mayor of Carrick Cllr Kieran Bourke’s proposal to write to Minister Rabbitte’s department seeking this clarification.
Cllr Bourke (FF) said his party was calling for an independent mediator to be appointed to liaise between Eirgrid and objectors over their serious concerns about the methodology used by Eirgrid in its decision to go for an overhead line. Edel Leddin of Eirgrid told the meeting a large number of options for Grid Link were studied over a period of two years and they were whittled down to six options, only one of which was an underground line and that was ruled out.
The best option that emerged was an overhead line using AC technology, she said.
