Welcome to Thurles Tourist Office! The office opened eighteen months ago and they offer support to local business and information on Tourism sites, walks, transport and anything in between.
Tourism in Thurles has always been tricky! It may not have the built heritage that other towns have which means it often gets over looked, but being the original birthplace of the GAA has always been a focal point for the town.
Tipperary is widely recognised as the location of the roots of many family trees and so many come here to find their historic stories and learn about their families. A visit to Thurles is a central part of many of those searches.
Thurles has needed a Tourist Office for some time to help people to move around the Mid - Tipperary area and to make sure they have plenty of information and get to have the best experiences.
The Tourist Office staff have extensive knowledge of local walks and where you can find the best built heritage and entertainment. They also have created a brochure that gives details and directions of anything worth visiting in the area.
The Tourist Office was opened by a local voluntary group, Tipperary Heartlands, which is a group of people from different enterprises and places around the area who have an interest or a business in Tourism, Arts and Culture.
Bringing together a wide range of skills, the group have been working together to create opportunities and market Mid - Tipperary to locals and visitors alike.
Tipperary County Council have been a great support to the Tourist Office since it opened and they continue to encourage tourism in the area. All of our staff are voluntary and are people with a passion for Thurles and the surrounds.
They have a wide breadth of knowledge in different areas- and if they don’t know they will find someone who does know.
The office is on Slievenamon Road, just off of Liberty Square.
Many would remember it as the old kit shop for the GAA and the really ancient may remember it as the National Bank.
The office only exists thanks to the kindness of the GAA who give the use of the shop in return for the staff maintaining the GAA Museum- Lár na Páirce.
The museum has one of the greatest collections of GAA memorabilia anywhere in the world. The Tourist Office is now an important part of the Thurles streetscape and has had hundreds of visitors and locals through the doors.
Information on Tourism sites, transport, accommodation or helping to find out about families or GAA games from yesteryear- we can find answers to most queries.
Currently the office is in charge of making arrangements for the Tourism Forum to be held in the Source on September 19th. They also produce a monthly poster, hard copy and digital, giving details of upcoming events in the Thurles area.
This is a free service and organizers of the many local events are encouraged to use it. So, if you want to learn more about the area or what’s available phone us, call in to the office or find us on Facebook or Instagram.
