Tribute to much-loved Tom Hurley who lived his life to the full

Tom Hurley RIP

Tom Hurley played a central part in life in Borrisoleigh and there was great sadness when he passed away last week.

Paddy Tynan paid a beautiful tribute to his friend this week: “Tom was a lovely man, very kind. His family, sport, work and friendship were all key things in his life.

“His family moved to Borrisoleigh in the mid-70s and they opened a shop which is now known as Hurley’s. Tom went to boarding school in Clara but did not stay long there as I’d say he understood there was a calling for him to come home to help with his father who was ill.

“He took his father to matches and would be leading his father up the sidelines giving a running commentary on the match.

“Tom first worked in Gleesons, in transport for about 12 years and then progressed into Salesforce and was a professional salesman covering areas from his home town of Borrisoleigh.

“He did that up until he got a job with Heffernan’s Transport who take care of people with special needs.

“That came easy to Tom as he was a very kind person.

“Tom was a great sportsman. He loved football, Liverpool was his team from a young age. He was a proud member of Nenagh Ormond RFC and Munster Supporters Club. He also supported Ireland. Himself and his good wife Helen went to many matches from Cardiff to Paris.

“Tom loved hurling. He got a real rush of adrenalin when Tipp were doing well but Tom’s real sporting love was  Borris Ileigh.

“He always enjoyed the aftermatch deliberations and after a few sociables in the village with many of his great friends. Tom’s analysis was usually accepted as the correct one.

“He was involved with underage teams for boys and girls for years and had a great affinity with young people. He always trusted in their ability and their contribution and got the best out of them.

“Tom’s mantra was to be honest in your endeavours and achieve what you could. During his years as a mentor he won five north titles and three county titles. He was also involved as a selector this year with the club Under 19 team.

“Tom’s respect for young people was reciprocated and could be seen by the huge guard of honour that was in Borrisoleigh last Wednesday evening, they lined the village,” Paddy concluded.

There was a minute’s silence before BorrisIleigh played Thurles Sarsfields in Semple Stadium last Sunday afternoon in memory of Tom. Sympathy to all who knew him. May he rest in peace.
