Wednesday , August 17, has loomed large in the minds of Leaving Certificate students in Cashel Community School since the examinations finished in late June. In the same way as the grey clouds have hovered over the country all summer, the thoughts of Leaving Cert. students have drifted to results day.
However, from 9am last Wednesday the prospects of a bright future began to dawn for the class of 2011 as student after student emerged from room one in Cashel Community School with the results sheet which will open up new horizons for the 124 who received their results.
With those results safely in hand, the now all important points total calculated and the essential phone calls made or received, the students took the opportunity to chat with classmates, teachers and friends for the last time in the assembly area before venturing out under the grey sky of an Irish summer which somehow did not seem near as gloomy as it appeared earlier that morning.
The results were a source of pride for the students, their parents, families and of course their teachers and reflected the ability and consistent work rate of the class of 2011. The frequency with which ‘A’ grades appeared on results sheets was a feature of this year’s results with four, five and six A grades on higher course papers greeting delighted students as they opened the all important brown envelope. The outstanding nature of the results ensured that students could face the CAO process confident of qualifying for a place on a vast range of third level courses such as architecture, medicine, law, engineering, nursing, science, commerce, in a variety of universities and colleges throughout Ireland.
The insensitive, now almost clichéd, headlines on the national media regarding the poor performance nationally of students in maths and science subjects were of no relevance to students in Cashel Community School with students performing way above the national average in these subjects and indeed across the entire range of twenty subjects offered by the school at all levels to cater for the interests and abilities of all students who make up the school community.
In view of the precarious state of the economy the vast majority of students plan to engage in some form of further education in order to enhance their prospects of employment in the changed economic environment in which they now find themselves. Many students have secured much sought after places in Post Leaving Certificate Courses both locally and further afield. There also appears to be a renewed interest in courses in areas such as agriculture, horticulture and the food industry, with degree and Post Leaving Certificate Courses in these areas proving very popular with students. The recently acquired enhanced status of Tipperary Institute has also attracted the attention of a number of students who recognise and appreciate the value and convenience of having a third level institute on their doorstep, offering excellent courses in areas such as computers, business, marketing and social studies.
The joy of results day was also shared by the students in the Leaving Certificate Applied class. Following two years of continuous assessment involving, written , oral and practical examinations together with hard earned credits for assignments and attendance ,students emerged with Leaving Certificate results which were a source of great joy to all concerned .The vast majority of the class received an overall merit grade with one student receiving a distinction which is the highest result possible in the Leaving Certificate Applied examination.
As the sun set on Wednesday, August 17, the thoughts of the class of 2011 turned to plans and thoughts of the Debs Ball on Thursday, August 25, and to life outside and beyond the familiar and secure walls of Cashel Community School.
The students and staff who will return to the school for the 2011/12 school year compliment the class of 2011 on their excellent results and thank them for their leadership during the 2010/11 school year and above all wish them health and happiness in the future.
