Drombane man Peter Ryan is running from Malin Head in Donegal all the way Mizen Head down in Cork which is Ireland’s most southerly point.

The route today was Malin – Muff – Derry – Lifford – Strabane – Newtownstewart and on to Omagh which was 108km in total.

The five day challenge is a gruelling one, with the longest leg seeing Peter run the equivalent of over three marathons in just one day.

The shortest day of running is 108 kilometres while the longest one is 130 kilometres. Overall Peter will run 586km.

Funds raised from the event will go to the National Council for the Blind of Ireland (NCBI) to aid the development of the country’s first mobile unit, the Vision Van.

The Vision Van will travel nationwide and will be providing information, awareness and support services for sight loss and common eye conditions free across the country.

The 33 year old played soccer with Clodiagh Rangers and hurled with Upperchurch-Drombane in his formative years before Peter was diagnosed with Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy, a rare genetic form of vision loss.

Following that diagnosis, Peter eventually found his way back to sport and became a national tandem cycling champion before going on to compete at the Rio Paralympic Games in 2016.

Peter is this week continuing his trek around Ireland and he due to arrive in Nenagh on Tuesday evening next which will be the end of Day 3 of the current event.

The mammoth feat is set to be completed on World Sight Day 2023 (Oct 12).
