Tipperary cyclist Sam Bennett
Tipperary cyclist Sam Bennett has entered a new phase of his career by signing a two-year deal with French team Decathlon Ag2r La Mondiale.
The Carrick-on-Suir man has made the move from the German outfit Bora-Hansgrohe.
33-year-old Bennett won the Tour de France green jersey in 2020 but has been hampered by illness and injury in recent seasons.
He’s now looking forward to being the main sprinter with the French team.
Speaking about the move, he told RTÉ Sport "There are many things that influenced it.
"When I was a young amateur rider, I was watching Nico Roche and Philip Deignan in the team, and they are riders I looked up to.
"Then of course I saw the big opportunity to come to this team, to get an amazing race programme and to work with (bike manufacturer) Van Rysel, which is fantastic.
"I think it's the best environment for me to be in to reach my top level.
“So I’m excited, and it’s a new adventure".
