Brendan O'Donoghue has dominated the Irish amateur senior snooker championship in recent years
Brendan O’Donoghue, who has been honoured with an Annerville award by the Tipperary United Sports Panel, continued his domination of Irish amateur snooker in 2023 by winning the national senior title for a record sixth time, a third year in a row and for the fifth time in eight years.
In the final played at the Snooker Billiards Ireland Academy of Excellence in Carlow, the Nenagh man beat the number one ranked player in Ireland, Ross Bulman, by 7-5 in a brilliant match that was streamed live.
Brendan was in top form with incredible break-building, safety shots and long pots in the match to keep the young Youghal man away from the table to claim this record-breaking sixth Irish amateur title. Such was the nature of his achievement that Snooker Billiards Ireland (SBI) awarded him the perpetual cup to keep.
En route to the final, Brendan O’Donoghue beat Eric Pei 4-0 in the last 16, and in the semi-final he accounted for Ryan Cronin by 6-3.He also had the tournament high break with a superb 132 break.
Brendan was also a key player on the New Institute, Nenagh team that won its fourth premier All-Ireland Club championship with a 3-1 win over the Crucible Snooker Club in the final, having lost to the Cork club in the Munster semi-final the previous week.
The Tipperary Sports Stars of the Year will receive their Annerville awards, sponsored by Bulmers, from the Tipperary United Sports Panel at the Talbot Hotel Clonmel on Saturday night week, January 27.
Some tickets are still available from Sports Panel Treasurer Ken Conway, tel. 087-6784510.
