Councillor says that Tipp County Council issue is being 'ignored' by a Government department

Nenagh Councillor Seamus Morris has described the lack of response by the Department of Defence regarding the state of the Military Barracks on Summerhill as “disgraceful” at a recent meeting of the Nenagh Municipal District.

The Military Barracks has been an ongoing issue in the District over the years, and Morris didn’t hold back in his assessment of the situation regarding the historic site which was described as “extremely neglected” by Cllr Michael O’Meara, who supported Cllr Morris in his disapproval.

“The Department of Defence disgracefully haven’t come back to us about it and they’re ignoring us at this stage.

“It’s simply not good enough to be ignored like this by a Government Department,” he said.

Cllr Morris suggested to the members present at the meeting to slap the overgrown site with a dereliction notice and also undergo a survey on how viable the barracks is as a site.

He was supported in his dissatisfaction by Cllr O’Meara over the situation, however, O’Meara stopped short of backing Morris on hitting the site with a dereliction notice and acknowledged that the site needed to be “cleaned up in the short term” as the overgrowth is now becoming an issue in the adjacent Summerhill estate of Hawthorns.

Cllr O’Meara further suggested that the Council use funding from the Monuments Grant to put toward a feasibility study and, also, continue efforts to organise a meeting with the Department of Defence to solve the problem once and for all for everyone in Nenagh.
