New entrepreneurial scheme for second level students in county Tipperary town is launched

Students from Carrick-on-Suir’s three secondary schools gathered at Comeragh College on Monday for the launch of The Journey of an Idea Student Entrepreneurial Programme that boasts a five-year annual €5,000 bursary for student businesses and initiatives.

The programme is being spearheaded by Explore Carrick-on-Suir and Local Enterprise Office Tipperary and both organisations kicked off the scheme by hosting The Journey of an Idea seminar.

The event was attended by about 120 students from Scoil Mhuire, Edmund Rice and Comeragh College secondary schools and featured talks from a range of leading business, economics and educational figures.

They included well-known economist Jim Power from Clonea, who spoke on the subject of “The Power of an Idea” and Pat McInerney from SETU, who explored how research drives innovation.

Entrepreneur Luke Currall discussed the intersection of creativity and business, encouraging students to merge their passions with practical solutions.

Students participated in interactive Q&A sessions and brainstorming activities hosted by former Rose of Tralee Kirsten Mate Maher of Beat 102103 and Explore Carrick-on-Suir.

A panel discussion, featuring Lynne Geraghty of Carrick-on-Suir’s My Dress Bridal Wear boutique; Brian White of Carrick-on-Suir Lions Club and Aideen Meany of Meany's Shoes highlighted real-life entrepreneurial journeys and the importance of community involvement.

It was a terrific day with Tipperary County Council representatives, councillors and TDs in attendance, showing their strong support for the programme

In her speech, Sarah Jane Cleary, Commercial and Tourism Manager of Explore Carrick-on-Suir explained the programme was about creating opportunities, building confidence, resilience and encouraging you to think creatively and make a real difference.

“We see and believe in the boundless potential of young people like you, and the positive impact you can have on a community like Carrick-on-Suir,” she said.

Tina Mulhearne, LEO Business Advisor, also announced the launch of the LEO Tipperary Student Enterprise Programme in Carrick at the seminar.

“It’s truly inspiring to witness the creativity and ambition of our student entrepreneurs in action.

“This programme not only nurtures their entrepreneurial spirit but also contributes to the local economy and community development.

“We look forward to supporting these bright minds as they embark on their entrepreneurial journeys,” she said.

Tony Musiol, Director of Carrick Economic Development added: “We hope the seeds of ideas planted today will create successful enterprises in the future for Carrick-on-Suir and its hinterland."

Carrick students can now register their interest in the programme.

A €5,000 bursary is awarded annually for five years for student enterprises and initiatives . There programme also offers exciting opportunities, prizes, webinars, networking and support.
